Casablanca Finance City Authority held the conference “Opportunities and challenges of digitization in Africa” in Casablanca, Morocco, on May 19. The event was organized to support Africa in its digital transformation by garnering buy-in across the industry. It also provided the CFC ecosystem, consisting of over 70 companies with CFC status, with the chance to open the debate on the key issues surrounding digitization in Africa.
Led by the CEO of CFC, Said Ibrahimi, the conference was moderated by Malick Diawara, Editor in Chief of the online magazine Le Point Afrique and specialist in international economic relations. Following the initial keynote address presenting the market and forecasts for the Information and Communications Technology sector in Africa by Mohamed Dembele, a director at PwC, the first panel discussion focused on the challenges of keeping up with changing needs and services on the continent. Another key topic in the debate was the impact of the digital transformation on African societies against the backdrop of an emerging Africa 2.0.

The speakers analyzed the current shift towards an all-digital environment, indicating that Africa’s move into the digital age is through mobile technology. These technological advances are expected to level out socio-economic disparities by providing easier access to services, especially in education and health care. Debate also touched on the risks and challenges of e-reputation management and digital crisis management due to the development of these new services and digital communication.
The digital revolution – through financial services, e-commerce, e-learning and recruitment – offers Africa an opportunity to develop new business potential and create jobs. The conference confirmed the CFC’s key role in driving investment in Africa.
