Zinsou takes stock of the health situation on the continent: 46 countries affected, 4000+ cases identified as of March 30
Africa re-entered the pandemic late, however there is a rapid spread
The continent seems more vulnerable due to:
Outdated health systems
Fragile populations and “living on a daily basis” (more than 80% of employment from the informal sector)
Africa does not have the means for an advanced health response, however 2 glimmers of hope exist:
The continent is young and therefore potentially less affected by morality
Some experience of pandemic episodes (Ebola type) is an asset
The pandemic could be accompanied by an economic and humanitarian crisis on the continent:
Declining domestic demand and consumption
Shock on exports (price and volume of raw materials & well manufactured)
An effort to refinance companies as well as measures to make the poorest poorest (notably via microfinance solutions) would help mitigate the effects of the crisis.
