Mixed reactions as jailed ex south african president released on parole

Political News

South Africans expressed mixed reactions after prison authorities announced they had granted medical parole to former president Jacob Zuma, who had been serving time behind bars. Zuma, 79, was sentenced to a 15-month prison sentence 2 months ago by the country’s Constitutional Court for contempt after he refused to appear before a judicial commission probing graft during his nearly decade-long presidency. He spent a few weeks in prison before being admitted to a hospital where he later underwent surgery. Zuma’s incarceration in July led to violent riots in South Africa, claiming more than 300 lives and witnessing looting and vandalism estimated to cost businesses billions of South African rands.
