Madagascar president re-elected as opposition denounces irregularities
Actualités politiques

Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina has secured a 3rd term after the electoral body said he had obtained 58,9% of votes in an election marked by low turnout. Most of the opposition boycotted the election and led street protests in Antananarivo, several of which were dispersed with tear gas and police arrests. Opposition claimed Rajoelina should not have run as he acquired French nationality in 2014, which automatically revokes his Malagasy one. Rajoelina first rose to power in a 2009 coup. He then stepped down after almost 5 years as leader of a transitional authority and then became president again after winning a 2018 election.
