Extension of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan

On the international security front, the United Nations Security Council renewed in late April and confirmed in early May 2026 the mandate of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) until 30 April 2027. The resolution introduces a strategic recalibration of the mission, with a ceiling of: 12,500 military personnel; 2,101 police officers. The vote also highlighted divisions within the Security Council, as China and Russia abstained, criticizing what they described as unilateral pressure placed on South Sudan's transitional government.
