In Central Africa, the banking sector is undergoing a historic transformation with the nationalisation of Société Générale's Cameroonian subsidiary. In May 2026, the Government of Cameroon officially acquired nearly 84% of the share capital of Société Générale Cameroun (SGC). The institution will now operate under the name General Bank of Cameroon (GBC).
