Bab el-Mandeb tensions threaten African trade routes

Continuing instability around Bab el-Mandeb, one of the world's key maritime chokepoints, is increasing risks to shipping through the Red Sea. Disruptions can raise freight and insurance costs and affect supply chains linked to African economies including Egypt, Ethiopia and Djibouti. The security of the corridor therefore remains both a geopolitical issue and a direct factor in the continent's trade competitiveness.
