Kenya’s planned tax hikes spark anger

Actualités politiques

Kenya wants to raise taxes to help pay off its massive foreign debt. But with Kenyans hard hit by high prices, the government’s Finance Bill is proving wildly unpopular. Ruto was elected in 2022 on a pledge to improve the life of Kenyans and bring down the costs of basic commodities in an economy impacted by COVID-19, price hikes fueled by Russia’s war in Ukraine and widespread drought. But amid shortfalls in revenue collection, high inflation, and massive public debt, the government had a tough time. The decision to scrap subsidies on maize flour and petrol fueled further discontent and when widespread tax hikes have been announced, people’s anger spilled over.
