HALF OF ALL JOBS IN AFRICA IMPERILED BY THE VIRUS FALLOUT

With economic activity almost at a standstill, around half of the jobs in all of Africa are at risk and 48% fewer people will be lifted out of poverty, UNECA said. Many businesses and informal traders may not survive the restrictions that are already weighing on trade.

The region’s finance ministers say it could take at least 3 years for the continent to recover from the virus-driven slowdown. They’ve called for an emergency stimulus package and debt-servicing relief for 2 to 3 years to avert a humanitarian crisis.
