Benin: Patrice Talon wins presidential election

Incumbent Patrice Talon won a majority of votes cast in the 1st round of presidential elections in Benin, according to provisional results released by the national and autonomous electoral commission. Talon received 86% of the votes with a turnout rate around 50%. The results are awaiting validation by the Constitutional Court. The days leading to the election were marked by a democratic crisis with national and international observers highlighting a democratic setback since Talon’s term began in 2016.
