The EU vowed to support any measures adopted by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) against the recent coup in Niger. The EU joins the strong condemnation expressed by the heads of state of the sub-region against the “unacceptable” putsch, underlining that elected President Mohamed Bazoum remains the sole head of the state of Niger. Bazoum was elected in 2021 in Niger’s first democratic power transition since it gained independence from French colonial rule in 1960.
