France weighs withdrawal of some troops from Niger

Political News

France has about 1,500 troops stationed in Niger, where there was a coup in July. French media cite government sources as saying the withdrawal of “some elements” is under discussion. The talks are not being held with coup leaders, but with regular army officials with whom France has long been cooperating. Niger became a major hub for France after coups forced the withdrawal of French troops from neighboring Mali and Burkina Faso. Some French troops could be redeployed in the region, notably in neighboring Chad, while others could return to France.
